Hydroponics can be an interesting project to try at home. Many people have heard of hydroponically grown tomatoes. Plants don’t require soil as long as the water their roots are placed into have enough nutrients that the plant can absorb what they need directly. To get a very good primer on growing plants hydroponically is Hydroponics for the home gardener.

Hydrofarm grow light system is a great system that you can purchase to grown plants hydroponically. Many plants can be grown in a hydroponic system. Typically you still need a medium for the roots to be in little clay beads known as Hydronton is one such medium. You don’t use soil in the pots at all when you are doing hydroponics. You can submerge a pot filled with these clay beads into a Tupperware container containing two to three inches of nutrient rich water for a quick and easy way to create a hydroponic system. You can also use gel such as crystal magic soil.

There are a number of reasons that growers decide to use hydroponics over traditional growing procedures.  One of these reasons is the grower knows exactly what is in his water and can easily make adjustments. It is very easy to track what you put into your water and in what concentration. Another reason that some people like hydroponics is because some people think that veggies grown in hydroponics taste better. You Could try so many different types of veggies to experiment what grows well for you. You could consider starting to grown plants like tomatoes, herbs, celery, and lettuce as these all have been proven to grow well. Remember you are not limited to veggies! You can easily propagate houseplants for friends using this same method. Devils ivy is an example of a plant that would take very well to this procedure.

If you can grow plants traditionally, you really should give hydroponics a try. This can be a fun system for growing plants so you can have fresh herbs year round and maybe even fresh tomatoes off of the vine. There is not much investment involved nor materials.
